KeymasterIf you want to build your credit score up, you want to focus on these important areas:
-
- Make sure credit bureaus can see your rent and utility payments: Monthly bills you pay on time can make a positive impact on your credit score. Look into tools like rent reporting that show your good credit habits to the credit bureaus, even if you pay without using a credit card
- Reduce your credit utilization ratio: Keep your credit card debt as low as you can, so that outstanding balances don’t show up on your credit reports and hurt your credit score.
- Maintain timely payments: Pay bills and debts on time, since credit scores tend to improve if you show a history of on-time payments.
- Pay more than the minimum each month: The lower your monthly credit card balance is, the sooner you’ll pay it off, and the less interest you’ll pay. Paying all or a lot of your credit card balance also makes your credit utilization lower, which is another big factor. It can be hard to do this though, so focus on making at least more than the minimum payment each month.
There are lots of factors that affect your credit score, but starting with these should give you a solid foundation.
