For common credit scoring scales, 850 is the maximum credit score possible, meaning an 800 is close to perfect, and well above the average for most Americans (about 717). For FICO scores, 800 falls in the “exceptional” range.

Everyone’s financial situation is different, so there isn’t a tried and true way to get an 800 credit score. There are some reliable strategies to build credit though.

What are 3 things you should do to set yourself up for credit building?

    • Always pay all your bills on time

Payment history makes up more than a third of your credit score, and you improve your payment history by making all your bill payments on time. You won’t immediately see your score drop if you are a day late paying a bill. Late payments generally don’t get reported to credit bureaus for a month.

    • Keep low balances on any credit cards

The general rule is to keep your utilization under 30%, but most people with an 800 credit score or higher have a much lower rate, somewhere between 11 and 12%.

    • Stay aware of your credit history

Your credit history is not as important as payment history or credit utilization, but it still factors in. If you have an old credit card that you don’t use, make sure you know the consequences before you close it. Usually the older your oldest credit account, the better.
