KeymasterWhenever you apply for credit, the lender you applied to will request or “inquire” for a copy of your credit report from one of the three credit bureaus. You might also know this by a different name – “hard pull” – but it’s the same process.
Those inquiries from lenders will show up later on your credit report, but only inquiries from new credit applications. So if you apply for a new credit card or home loan, the inquiry from that application shows up.
There are two types of credit inquiry: soft and hard. A soft inquiry will NOT impact your credit score. On the other hand, a hard inquiry WILL impact your credit score, resulting in a temporary drop of a few points.
Hard inquiries or pulls happen when you apply for new credit, but soft or soft pulls happen for different reasons. A few common examples of soft inquiries include a new job checking your credit as part of a background check, or you checking your credit report on your own.
So if you’re checking your credit report, or if a new job is checking your credit as part of the hiring process, your credit score won’t be affected.
