KeymasterApplying for new credit will result in a “hard inquiry” on your report, which can lower your credit score temporarily.
Hard inquiries remain on your credit report for two years. However, their impact on your credit score typically diminishes before they drop off your report.
Generally, a hard inquiry might lower your score by a few points, and this impact is most significant in the first 12 months. After the first year, the effect is less noticeable, even though the inquiry itself still shows up on your report for the full two years.
It’s important to be mindful of how often you apply for new credit. Multiple hard inquiries in a short period can signal to lenders that you’re a higher risk, which can hurt your ability to get new credit or result in higher interest rates.
Remember, you’re entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—once a year through AnnualCreditReport.com. Checking your credit report regularly lets you spot errors and see how inquiries are affecting your score.
