KeymasterLong story short: all credit cards are good at building credit. There is no single best card.
When picking a card, find a card you qualify for and think about the perks, benefits, and features you want. These will have the biggest impact on how you use and enjoy your card.
Once you have a credit card, there are two rules to follow:
- Always pay on time
- Keep your credit utilization low (use less than 30% of the total amount you can borrow)
Your credit score and history can impact the kinds of credit cards you can get. If you have less history or a lower score, you might need to start with a secured credit card. These cards work like regular credit cards, except you need to put a deposit down first. The size of your deposit matches how much you can spend on the card in total. It depends on the card issuer, but many banks will reward people who pay on time with the chance to update to a regular credit card.
If you’re a student, you can qualify for a student credit card, which does not require a security deposit and has a more accommodating approval process.
Kikoff offers a Secured Credit Card, which comes with a host of awesome features, like cash back and overdraft protection.
Regardless of which option you go with, make sure that the card you pick reports to all three credit bureaus. That way, regardless of which bureau future lenders rely on, they can get a snapshot of your credit history.
