Keymaster- Get Your Credit Report: First, get a copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can do this once a year at AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Review Your Report: Carefully check your report for anything that looks off or inaccurate. Common errors include incorrect personal information, accounts you don’t recognize, incorrect account statuses, and duplicate accounts.
- Gather Evidence: Collect any documents that support your claim. These could be payment receipts, statements, or any correspondence related to the error.
- Write a Dispute Letter: Write up a dispute letter to the credit bureau reporting the error. Make sure to clearly state what the error is, and why it’s wrong, and include copies of any supporting documents. Be sure to keep copies for yourself too.
- Contact the Creditor: Send a copy of your dispute letter and supporting documents to the creditor or whichever entity reported the inaccurate information.
- Submit Your Dispute: You can submit your dispute online, by mail, or over the phone. Here are the links to the online dispute pages for the three major bureaus:
- Wait for a Response: The credit bureau typically has 30 days to investigate your dispute. They’ll contact the creditor to verify the information. If the investigation finds that the information is incorrect, the bureau will correct your report and notify you in writing.
- Review the Results: Once your dispute is resolved, review the updated credit report to double-check that the error is fixed.
