What types of credit report errors can be disputed?
With multiple accounts and years of history, errors are more common than most people think. Fixing the errors can improve your credit worthiness to the three credit bureaus and impact your credit score in a positive way.
The old derogatory mark error
A hard inquiry should fall off your credit report after 2 years. A collection, charge-off, or late payment should fall off your credit report after 7 years. If you find that these old derogatory marks haven’t fallen off your credit report, you should consider disputing them with the credit bureaus.
The medical collection error
If you had a medical collection under $500, a paid medical collection, or a collection less than year old your credit report, we recommend that you check that these collections don’t appear on your credit report.
Can’t correct these errors? Submit a complaint with the CFPB
If you’re having issues disputing these errors, you can consider submitting a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
